Tyre Sealant

It may be a subject that has been brought up before but has anyone had experience of tyre sealants such as "Ultraseal" which is suposed to prevent puntures and last the life of the tyre. It is different from the normal Halfords type of puncture repair tyre inflator which also buggers up the tyre. It certainly seems the ideal alternative to carrying a spare unless anyone knows different.

Re: Tyre Sealant

Certainly the cans of tyre-weld work (they are even shipped with some production cars in place of a spare wheel). Though these are normally added to a flat tyre. I've never heard of one you put in a normal tyre and leave sloshing about. In fact, it seems pretty dangerous - how will you know when you have a puncture?

Re: Tyre Sealant

Thanks for that Mike but according to the website "Ultraseal" cannot cause a balance problem and tests have been carried out which show that a slight imbalance would be exaggerated after using "Ultraseal" so it is advisable to have the wheels balanced after application.
Paolo, this isn't the normal can of tyre sealer and it is supposed to coat the inside of the tyre so if applied correctly there is nothing sloshing about. The other benifit is states to have is that it prolongs the life of the tyre by preventing crackingn which would be of considerable benefit to a Cobra owner with a low mileage.

Possibly worth another evaluation as the benefits could be considerable. I have a friend who is just about to treat the tyres of his "Crysler Voyager" as he has a gas conversion that takes up the spare wheel space so I will let you know how he gets on.

Re: Tyre Sealant

Tyre Sealants are a wonderful thing when used in their original design context, Ie: Military, Agricultural, Industrial and Off Road applications. They are NOT designed for High Speed road work because they mask the fact that you have a puncture which, could well be a 4" nail that is rubbing away at the inside of the sidewall waiting to cause a high speed Blowout. If they were acceptable, dont you think that people like the Police, Fire Brigade, Ambulance and Haulage companies would use them? They after all are the type of people to whom punctures and all the inconvenience that goes with them effects probably the most. Why is this service not offered by Tyre dealers, Why do Tyre Manufacturers not offer a puncture proof tyre? Dunlop tried it back in the eighties, but withdrew it after a fatality was linked to it! The "get you out of trouble", cans you carry in the boot, normally do as the say. But should only be used in emergency situations.
I may not know a lot about anything! But I have spent most of the last 32 years at the sharp end of the Tyre Trade
