Sealant to underside

Evening gents, simple one this evening as usual from a simple one!!!

I am about to put the wheels on and drop the car off of the axle stands but should I seal the underside with the spray on rubbercoat from Hammerite??

Is this the best stuff to use or can someone recommend something better, or is it a silly idea.

Answers on a postcard too!!

Thanks

Mark

Re: Sealant to underside

Good Idea under the wheel arches, but nowhere else.

Mark you don't mention where you are thinking of putting this stuff on. Your chassis should already have been protected (either powder coat, galvanised or painted) before you put the body on.
One area you should think about is the inside of your wings however, above teh wheels. It is a good idae to protect the inside of the glassfibre to protect it from stone chips that in extreme might damage the gel coat on teh outside and cause crazing. I have stuck 3 mm closed cell foam rubber on teh inside of mine above the wheels and no probs after more than 10 years. Some people put a kind of rubberised paint in teh same place.

Re: Sealant to underside

Evening gents, yes I meant just to the fibreglass on the inner side of the wheel arches , so that when you look in the arch it is completley covered in the rubbery stuff.
Just to protect it a little. Anyone had any problems with the spray on stuff??

tHANKS AGAIN

Re: Sealant to underside

Mark,

I've used "stone chip" on the inside of the wheel arches, and looking at the less that perfect quality of the powdercoat on my chassis I may be tempted to paint the chassis with underseal when I'm finished.

Re: Sealant to underside

I read an article in one of the Mini (Sorry!!!) magazines a while back where a guy had put some underseal on some glass fibre panels and it had leached through to the Gell completely ruining it. I would suggest you make absolutely sure with the manufactures of any product that what you intend to put on is compatible with GRP.
I believe that Hammerite took over Finnigans who used to produce/market Waxyoil. I'm also pretty sure that Hammerite market an underseal that actually contains waxyoil. If this is the stuff you intend using I would suggest you make pretty sure it's OK first. JMHO.
If you find out be sure to let us all know.....
