12 V coil

Yesterday whilst driving up and down the back road (honest its legal ) my engine would badly misfire once it was warm.

I am pretty sure its the coil breaking down, now the problem is how do I buy a 12volt coil.

I am running a rover V8 with out a ballest resistor, I have asked at 2 local motor factors for a 12 volt non ballest coil but both have asked for what make, type and year of car as they do not know which coils are lower voltage ballest and which not.

Can someone tell me of a make model that used a 12volt coil, I was thinking of early capri or cortina but some one has told me that they had lower voltage ballest coils.

thanks

jeff

Re: 12 V coil

The electronic ignition makers such as Sparkrite used to sell 'plain' 12V coils; are they still available. Otherwise, surely the details you need should be in any Lucas/Bosch/AC Delco catalogue. You could measure the resistance across the primaries of yours, then buy one with the same or greater.

Re: 12 V coil

Hi Jeff,
Just been looking at the coil out of my sierra doner,it appears to say 12v.I can"t see any reference to a resistor in the wiring diagram.
It does say electromic ignition on it and I thought I would be able to use it
Does anyone know if it would be suitable with a 35dlm8
cheers
steve

Re: 12 V coil

Hi all thanks for the replies,

Real Steel do not sell non ballest coils, Burton Power sell them, I have ordered a uprated Bosh one about £30 with vat and delivery. It would seem that most coils fitted up to about 1970 were non ballest and those since are., this info from Burton Power.

Halfords have just recently stopped selling coils and points for these older cars.

Steve, my old robin hood had a non ballest system and I put 8000 miles on it using a sierra coil that I had laying about, so how good the info from Burton is I dont know.
