Alternator mounting position On a GD.

Following my other thread about which ACG to use this has raised a good point, where do I mount the alternator?

On a GD can it be mounted in the stock location of does it have to be moved elsewhere. By stock I mean Low on the passengers (US) side (drivers in UK).

Please see attached pic for what i think is the stock location.

Any advice / pictures of a Ford 302 in a GD will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Re: Alternator mounting position On a GD.

Hi Andy,
I also got a March Alternator Bracket but the Alternator will foul the steering shaft (this is on a 351W which is slightly taller than the 302) so I have mounted mine in the same possition as Craigh with the main pivot going to the 5/8th (I think) taped hole in the head. It is the one where the emissions crap pumps air in to the exhaust. Then it is braced to the water pump with an alloy bracket. If you want a pic give me a shout! Water pump of at mo cos I am waiting for a gasket.

Re: Alternator mounting position On a GD.

Hi Andy,
I have the same bracket as shown in your pic and it will not reverse so I used the opposite air hole and made up a bracket for the bottom pivot (I will pretty them up once my milling machine is up and running) and a small triangular piece to bolt the adjusting rod to the top of the water pump.
For the bottom pivot I used a piece of st/st hex bar and turned a 5/8th? UNC to fit the head then cut to length with a female thread to suit the long bolt you get with the kit, if you are carefull you can measure the exact length you require for the hex that is now the spacer by fitting a threaded stud in the air hole then line up your alternator with the crank pulley. be carefull on measuring and you should be ok.

Re: Alternator mounting position On a GD.

Hmm,
just had another look at your piccy is that the p/steering or airpump in the way of this method if so you may need to go underslung but watch for the fuel pump if you are going mechanical, and bottom hose etc.
Just a bit more head scratching I am afraid

Re: Alternator mounting position On a GD.

Thanks for the pics, appears to defeat the object of buying a bracket if I have to make my own! Im intending to mount the ACG on the drivers side (UK) of the car, top left as you look at the front of the engine, This was advised by Andy at GD, this should put the ACG up out of the way of the steering.

Thanks for the info!

Cheers
