Squeaking rear brakes

I have the Jag based version with inboard discs, and my rear brakes squeak quite loudly when coasting slowly and pulling away from a standstill, which is becoming annoying. If I press the brake pedal or pull the handbrake lever it will stop momentarily, but start again when I let the brakes off. Once I get above about 15 miles an hour I cannot hear it any more. Anyone else had this problem, or got any ideas how to cure it?

Thanks

Glyn

Re: Squeaking rear brakes

Glyn,
Sounds like the pads could be glazed.
Try removing them and rubbing on some coarse wet and dry paper on a flat surface to remove this. Then coat the back of the pads with Copaslip copper grease (available any motorists store).
Also clean the surfaces of the discs with wet and dry before you put them back, this can be done without removal.
If this does not cure it maybe you need new pads, and bed them in properly.

Re: Squeaking rear brakes

Mine did this last year - and it was the handbrake pads that casued it. All I did was lightly abuse the handbrake (left it on for 200yds) and it stopped.

It will probably start doing it again now I have said this!

Re: Squeaking rear brakes

This is an age old problem that plagued me for ages
Its probably the handbrake pads.

A Jag mechanic called me after I posted a thread about two years and ago and advised me to remove the HB pads - clean off the paint from the metal backing and apply copper grease (backing only of course).
Never got round to doing it cos left the handbrake on and drove for about 200yds by mistake and that seemed to cure it
It is a pain though !"!

Mind you I'm like Wilf - now that I've said its OK at the moment it will probably come back - !!

Re: Squeaking rear brakes

There is actually a more rigorous cure, and that is to slightly bend out the "pad return fingers" to ensure a tad more clearance between the handbrake pads and the discs in the "off" position, but this is a difficult thing to get right, took me several goes, and at least I have a nice inspection hatch in my rear bulkhead that lets me get to the rear calipers easily, wouldn't even attempt it from underneath.

Re: Squeaking rear brakes

Thanks for the suggestions, looks like I will have to forget to release the handbrake next time I go out.
