Getrag..Is it really up to the job??

Hi All

500 miles on the car and it's off the road again, this time the Getrag box seems to have given up the ghost. I seem to be able to select gears when the engine is off but its not easy and like waggling a stick in a bucket. Engine running I can only get third gear and thats a struggle.

Advice required and one or two questions please.

Cause? Any other ideas
Could have been a well worn box in the first place
Possible that I dialed in the bellhousing wrongly knackering the front bearing, however when I fitted the geabox up it slide in so smoothly it took me by suprise.

Questions
1. I am going to take this out on Wednesday, is it worth repairing?
2. Anyone had one refurbed and what likely cost?
3. Anyone driving a getrag like a complete hooligan and getting away with it?
4. Recommended replacement, I assume this would be Tremec?

All input welcome.
Cheers

Re: Getrag..Is it really up to the job??

Hi Warren and sorry I missed you yesterday at Ripon, I had a mare of a day with one thing and another.

Also sorry to hear about more trans issues. Sounds like a call to Ken is order! Hope you get it sorted.

Re: Getrag..Is it really up to the job??

I have just found a company near Leeds that will rebuild the Getrag for around £600, apparently they specialise in strengthening them for the uprated Supras etc.

They reckon it should then be capable of handling 450lb/ft and they are offering a 2 year/24,000 mile warranty.

This sounds pretty good, any bad reports about these guys?

Re: Getrag..Is it really up to the job??

If it`s going to cost 600 quid to rebuild stronger(plus the cost of any parts you may have already broken) it may be better to put 300-400 extra towards it and find a decent used tremec complete with bellhousing, clutch etc.
Also watch out for any guarantees the remanufacturers offer as there is usually some hidden smallprint such as "Warranty not applicable to racing, competition or misuse."
I may be in the same boat as you soon, having built mine with a Toyota Supra Turbo box. Some people get away with massive torque, some don`t

Good luck either way.

You don`t have to be mental to build a kitcar - but it definitely helps.

Re: Getrag..Is it really up to the job??

You can still pick up a 5 speed getrag for under 200 notes, so I would suggest you just swap it out and hang on the the old one if you eventually need to get one re-conned.

Re: Getrag..Is it really up to the job??

Hi Warren

For what it's worth I found this article some time ago.
Item 4 refers to a spring which if broken gives a sloppy feel to the gearchange.

Might be worth a check before you part with the hard earned cash.

Cheers,

Andy.

P.S. If you search the forum you'll find mixed reports on the Getrag and the correct identifying numbers etc. Some units are not as strong as others?

I'm told that the XJS unit is the stronger one but identifying it correctly can be a problem. Mine, which I know came out of an XJS cos I took it out myself, has 225 1:3 and 262 followed by a few other numbers on two seperate parts of the casing? I know of one other cobra running a SB stroker with 400ftlb of torque without any problems.

Attachment didn't work the first time.

If it hasn't worked now just send me a PM with your email and I'll forward it on.

Cheers,

Andy

Re: Getrag..Is it really up to the job??

Thanks for comments guys, I am going to rip the gearbox out tomorrow and take a quick look. If the unit is destroyed I will probably upgrade to Tremec as suggested.

Not a bad idea picking up another cheapy to see the summer out

Given the nature of the job I think I might as well have the engine out as well and stroke it. The need for more power has arrived sooner than expected so this is probably a good opportunity if I can find the funds. I agree with the sentiments that the Getrag situation seems to be a luck thing, some are just luckier than others. But for those interested the gearbox company I spoke to seem to know what they were talking about as they build many for the supra cruise/nitro/burnout/neon ground effect/2fast2furious bunch. They can uprate the Getrag to surive 450lb/ft but you would reach this with nitrous and a mild 350BHP tuned Chevy anyway.

If you are building to a budget, aren't we all, and have a good Getrag I think the extra investment would be worthwhile as long as you control the power urges. But faced with £600-800 that 'might' be OK I think I will spend a little more and upgrade.

Cheers all.
Warren
