Annoying N/S/R squeak. Any ideas?

Out the other day in my car and noticed it has a squeak on the N/S rear suspension (Jag IRS). Not all the time, just enough to make it annoying!

It sounds like metal on metal but had the car up in the air today and can't find anything wrong. Nothing seems loose. Re-greased a few bits and pieces. Still the same.

The only thing that seemed to cure it was putting some big heavy git in the passenger seat!

Could it be the springs on the spring carriers making the noise? There doesn't seem to be much else that could make this type of noise.

Anyone had a similar problem?

Could drive faster so I can't hear it I suppose!!

Was the suspension fully weighted up before you torqued the bolts? If not then the bushes are probably under strain while the car is sitting at rest. What to do is slacken the inner and outer pivot bolts while the weight of the car is on the ground, bounce it a few times to settlle the bushes and re-torque the bolts.

Re: Annoying N/S/R squeak. Any ideas?

My car had exactly the same thing just at low speed (trickling over speed bumps) after going over everything, it turned out to be the handbrake calipers (jag IRS) took em all to bits, cleaned, copper greased anything that could move, and hey! no squeaking!!
Learnt that the hard way, just about rebuilt the entire rear end of the car before I found that-do'h!!!

Re: Annoying N/S/R squeak. Any ideas?

Cheers Guys, already fully rebuilt the rear calipers originally so will leave that till I'm really stuck!

Torqued all the suspension nuts/bolts with the car sitting on the ground as you say Clive. However it's annoying me enough to do it again so cheers for that.

Anybody else got any other pearls of wisdom?

It sounds like something outer most on the suspension, so much so initially I thought it was the sidepipe mount loose............................................. .wasn't though!

Re: Annoying N/S/R squeak. Any ideas?

Hi,

I have some whistles sounds from the suspension at the bumps or small road imperfections, but it was easy to trace because the only change made where the new dampers and springs.
After a chat with the vendor, it appears to be the damper valves, they will do the re-valving during the winter period.

Under certain conditions my rear dampers squeak too. Since the conditions involved require low speeds, it is not something that happens very often.

Simple solution - turn up the wick!
