Getrag crossmember wanted + Getrag in Sumo?

Dear All

Currently fitting a getrag into my Sumo (SBC350).

- Does anyone have a getrag gearbox support assembly they want to get rid of as I am having difficultly finding one (or know a good source?)

- Also, the current set-up looks like the gear lever will be a little closer to the dash than perfect, would like to move it backwards by a couple of inches. Some gearboxes have lever extension kits. Does anyone know if they exist for getrags and if so where I could get hold of one (could one be fabricated?)

- Finally, has anyone else fitted a getrag into a Sumo, I would be very interested to compare notes! (spoke to Pilgrim and they were not aware of anyone) But looks like it will work.

As always a big THANK YOU to all those who respond!!!!

Regards

John

Give AK a call, I'm sure they'll sell you one. It'll need adapting for the Sumo chassis but at least you'll have something to start with.

Re: Getrag crossmember wanted + Getrag in Sumo?

I've got a getrag in a dax and used the rubber mounts from a BMW635csi to mount the box onto the chassis. The mounts bolt into the fork fittings on the rear casting, you may have to make up some sort of brackets etc. to get the height correct but they will make it easier. The original BMW crossmember was a pressed steel item that was a bit peculiar to adapt to fit. I've never seen one in a sumo but someone must have done it.

Re: Getrag crossmember wanted + Getrag in Sumo?

Go John, give it a try. An excellent G'box with loads in its favour ( including a sub-grand price tag!)

Although I have an AK which which is pretty well served for a Getrag, the approach adopted by Neil above it pretty well on the button. I cant think you will find a ready made bracket but its not too difficult to have fabricated if you dont have your own welder.

In terms of having the gear lever too far forward, if you can move the engine back a bit this is much batter for weight distritubtion. Perhaps too much to contemplate? Some getrags do have a longer extension on the back, but I'm afraid I could not tell you what car they are off. Mine was from a Jag and was not long, so I can only guess that you are perhaps looking for some BMW kit which was the other popular fit for the 5 speed. I will try and hook out a phot of the under gearbox support to give you an idea of what is needed. The dollies I am using can from AK, although the threads are not really long enough. I beleive they are native Landrover/Rangerover?
