XJ6 running gear

Hi

I have just got the Diff and axles (see my web site) for my GD build. Looking for advice on brake calipers and disks. I fully intend to replace these items but wondered if anyone could advise on the best to go for? I guess anodized alloy calipers and vented disks but I would like your advice.

Thanks and merry Christmas

Martin

Re: XJ6 running gear

The standard Jag brakes are more than adequate to stop a 2 ton jag so once they are fitted on a 1200kg car they are extremely effective.

I fitted new discs of the drilled variety but I would now advise to get grooved discs rather than have the risk of cracking. I sent my callipers to Ward engineereing who stripped them, Blasted them, Re Zinc plated them and reassembled them with new seals and pistons. I fitted EBC green stuff pads.

They work great on my Chevy powered car so on a Rover powered car they should be more than adequate.

Craig.

Martin

Just had a look at your web page but can't quite make out if you have 3 or 4 cylinder front callipers.

You really need the 4 piston ones for a Cobra replica.

Re: XJ6 running gear

Well spotted Craig.
Right on both counts??????

Unfortunately Martin you have 2 nearside front hub assemblies. One has a 4 pot caliper and the other has a 3 pot one.
Nip the 3 pot one back to the breakers and get them to swap it for an off side 4 pot.

Re: XJ6 running gear

Hadn't noticed that Dave

In the first picture the one on the left looks like a left hand, 4 pot assembly but in the last picture that is a left hand 3 pot assembly.

Looks like another 2 and a half hour drive back to the breakers is on the cards.

Craig.

Might be a stupid question but how do I tell which is the three pot or four pot one without taking it to bits. Just looks like a rusty mess at the mo!!!!??

Cheers

Re: XJ6 running gear

The 4 pot one has the brake pipe coming from the center of the caliper and the 3 pot pipe comes from the top. (The caliper has bulges where the piston housings are, there is a sort of "8" shape on the 4 pot ones on both sides. On the 3 pot the inside one looks different with just a single circular casting shape.
The only way forward is to get it swapped.

Hi

Is it just the wishbones that are different for the two different sides? Are all the other components the same? Looking at Ward's I could buy second had recon wishbones fairly cheaply. I was going to replace the calipers and discs any way. Is that viable? It saves me a 5 hour round trip if it is!!!

Thanks for all the advice

Martin

Just answered my own question looking at the Ward's price list. The wishbones are different but so are the uprights and steering arms. I guess Its my own fault for not looking properly, but thats inexperience for you. I guess its a long drive back to Stourbridge and a lesson learned!!
Thanks for the advice guys anyway.

Martin
