fuel feed pipes

I'm going to take my fuel tank out soon and may fit a bigger fuel feed pipe but was wondering if there was a reason why pilgrim fit the fuel feed from the top and whether i could put a new one in from the side near the bottom. Can anyone give me a valid reason why a feed from low down on the side shouldn't be used? :thumb:

Re: fuel feed pipes

The Dax tank feeds from a pipe right at the bottom of the tank. There is a small tank fitted to the bottom of the main tank and the pipe feeds from there.

There is an attachment on my post near the bottom of this page, of a drawing I made of the Dax tank.

Re: fuel feed pipes

I can think of a safety reason - a feed pipe that exits from the top of a tank is inherently safer than one that exits from the bottom, in the event of the pipe/tank join failing.

Re: fuel feed pipes

That's a good point Wilf, I'll probably re-think and replace the top 8mm feed with a bigger one rather than putting one lower, cheers :thumb:

Tone.
Would it not be easier to fit a swirl tank fed by a low pressure pump from your original feed ? Just a thought

I don't think that'll be easier although i haven't looked into it. I've never understood how they work on an efi system with a feed and return, do they have auto stop systems if they fill too much from the low pressure feed? my problem is, that i want to fit a better fuel pump that will definitely provide enough pressure at full rpm, the ones I've seen advertised have half inch (or 12.7mm or - feeds but mine is 8mm so,as I have to take the tank out anyway, fitting a new feed shouldn't be too much of a problem

Purpel-AK

The Idea of a swirl tank is OK but according to my knowledge, you need always separate the inlet from the outlet port to reduce turbulent movements at the area.
So some adjustment to the drawings showed at the site will help to solve the problem.

I have made a fast drawing so that you can understand what I mean.
I put there and in-pigment tube with a hole at the opposite side of the inlet port.
The hole should have the same or more surface as the outlet port.

Re: fuel feed pipes

Thanks Carlos :thumb:
The Googled link I posted was mearly to show Tony the principles of a swirl pot. Unless he is prepared to add a swirl pot into the boittom of his tank (low exit and the dangers that Wilf posted) I thought a seperate swirl pot maybe the way forward The main concern is that the HP outlet is never starved of fuel. Maybe the LP input should be placed higher up?

The attached diagram is a very quick one and doesn't inclide the pumps and filters needed. :thumb:
