Jag Suspension + stainless steel nuts & Bolts

Hi

I am in the middle of renovatingreconditioning a set of Jag axles (front and Back) and brakeshubs for my GD Cobra build. Can anyone advise me on using stainless steel nuts and bolts for the axlesuspension rebuild? Has anyone done this and if so where did they get them from. If I replace all the nuts and bolts from "Ward engineering" will they be SS or normal nutsbolts?

Thanks for any advice

Regards

Martin

Be very careful. The tensile strength of stainless is rubbish.

Not so much "Rubbish" more "questionable". This has been discussed many times on here. The concensus has always been to replace all suspension bolts with GENUINE Jag Nuts/Bolts, Or an equivalent new tensile rated bolt of 8.8 (metric) or S (Imperial) (Both are used) And to torque them to the Jag specs. There have been instances where the original bolts were reused and have subsequently failed!! Specifically, Steering Arm mounting bolts. Not a situation you really want to encounter

Re: Jag Suspension + stainless steel nuts & Bolts

I echo tarmacscratcher's comments.

Most stainless "dress up" fasteners you can buy are of very poor tensile strength compared to normal hiigh tensile bolts. In addition, stainless fasteners are prone to "galling" (seizing up to you and me!)

Whilst there are grades available that would be suitable, to understand them, identify them, and track them down is a task for an expert. Try a search here on "stainless" or similar, there has been good info posted in the past.

Of course, you might decide to become such an expert, but personally, wherever a fastener is safety critical, like suspension mountings, propshaft couplings, engine mounts, safety belt mounts, etc., I would just use an 8.8 or better high tensile normal steel nut & bolt.

Edit - Oh, and what Purple said too.

Re: Jag Suspension + stainless steel nuts & Bolts

Please don't use S/S bolts/nuts on any critical components, as said before the tensile strength is very poor, use good quality high tensile 8.8 grade fasteners.

why not carry out a little experiment, 2 M10 bolts one S/S and the other 8.8, slowly torque them up and see which one shears first!

Re: Jag Suspension + stainless steel nuts & Bolts

The only benefit I can see from using stainless apart from looks is one of corrosion. If you use Bright Zinc Plate high tensile bolts and coppaslip grease then you shouldn't have any bother disassembling at a later date.

Thanks Clive and the other guys,

I get the message and will not bother with the stainless.

Martin
