Lower Front Wishbone Bush - XJ6

Hi

Never done this before so can someone advise me on A) getting the old bushes out and B) getting the new ones in? The fact that they have a rubber bush round the actual metal bush makes it difficult to remove but I guess there must a an easy way for both removal and replacing?

Just as a point of interest, I had a nightmare gettin the bolts out that hold the supsension mount to the wishbone!! Must have taken me two hours but finally shifted them!!

Regards

Martin

The bush splits into two parts when put in a vice and persuaded with a large hammer blow to wishbone.
Easier if the wishbone is disassembled from ball joint.

Putting the new ones in is relatively easy. Some silicone grease, a vice and a suitable size socket did mine pretty well. (as i recall)

Getting the old ones out was (as i recall) a total smegging git involving a blow torch a lump hammer and a bad attitude.

Have fun

I had to burn mine out as well and i know others have done it this way too.

just don't do it indoors the fumes are pretty evil, and watch were they land cos once they get hold they stay burning, probably a bucket of sand/water may be useful to drop 'em in

It is top bush that splits in two.
As others indicate bottom bush much more difficult to remove. I used a socket to drift bush out with large hammer, no heat used but hard work, right arm like Popeye.

When you start on your rear suspension , you could find useful a Jag Rebuild DVD that I have a copy of. If you want, I will send you a copy, just PM your address to me.

Re: Lower Front Wishbone Bush - XJ6

It is always nice to to put too much stress on the actual arm and heating it can possibly alter the temper of the steel if you dont know what you are doing, an easy way is to make a drift to fit the internal and a hollow fork for the outer and compress in a good metal vice, sockets can do the trick if right size for the tools. I always remember watching my neighbour trying to remove a UJ off the prop shaft by heating and belting, it came off eventually but when refitted it was so out of balance he claimed his railings fell out.
Good luck.

Re: Lower Front Wishbone Bush - XJ6

The way I removed my lower bushes recently was to first carefully drill through the rubber bush with a 1/8 bit close to the inner sleeve several times. This made the subsequent pushing and shoving which is needed anyway easier. i did this with the wishbone still attached to the car - was upgrading my suspension to polyflex bushes after 14 years on the road. well worth while

Thanks for that info. Did the polyflex bushes go in easy enough??
