dodgy starter motor

Hi

Before I lay out 85 quid’s on a new RV8 starter does any one know what the problem is and can I fix it.

Starter engages the fly wheel once in every (approx)10 attempts, fly wheel is new and no missing teeth on either. Testing on the bench seems OK.

Thanks

jeff

Re: dodgy starter motor

When the starter motor doesn't engage can you hear it spinning freely or does it just click?

If you just get the click it could be a weak solenoid not pulling the gear into the flywheel. The switch that operates the starter is also on the end of the solenoid plunger so if it is weak it will not operate the starter. Also check the gear on the end of the motor is free to slide in and out.

Rimmers sell just a solenoid kit that could be a cheaper option.

Re: dodgy starter motor

Jeff, If you are SURE that the set-up works on the bench, and I am assuming that you mean installed on the engine on the bench, then I feel it must be high resistance in the wiring, check the positive and negative connections on the battery, and the connections on the starter motor, and the ones lots of people forget, the negative to earth, and the most common fault, the earth strap from the chassis to the engine.
regards bloke.
