Clutch Alignment Tool

Has any one got, or can give part number and supplier for a clutch alignment tool for the Getrag box.

I am having real problems getting the gearbox back in the Cob. I have a tool that I have used successfully before by bringing the diameter up to size with masking tape but for some reason I it just won't have it this time. Twice I have man handled the gearbox in and out and rechecked alignment and with only one day off a week thats two weeks down the drain.

I can only assume it's slightly out. The other problem I am having is with the new steel bellhousing, I have to rotate it so the release arm points fully down to get it up between the chassis rails and then rotate it fully back the other way once the gearbox it lifted to get the arm back past the chassis rail. All the time trying to avoid hitting the bloody heater, it's an AK. Does everyone have this problem? While on the subject I bought new studs, who is using studs and who is using bolts, bell to engine?

Any suggestions or things I might be missing here. I have done this countless times in the past but this is turning in to a real head scratcher and doing nothing for the blood pressure.

Cheers
Warren

Is it a Jaguar or BMW Getrag, or how many splines has your output shaft, as I have a clutch alignment tool for 10 spline.

Are you fitting new components together or components that have already been together before?

If they are new did you try the clutch plate on the gearbox input shaft to make absolutely sure they will fit together and have the correct size splines?

If a new spigot bush has been added to the crank shaft are you sure it the right internal diameter to fit the gearbox shaft?

Could the clutch release bearing be too thick and holding off on the clutch cover?

How big is the gap between the bell housing and the engine when you attempt to get it together?

I have fitted many clutches to all sorts of engines in the past and have never used anything more than a socket extension bar, various sockets and a roll of masking tape to make the correct size. Never had any problems fitting any of them together.

Craig.

Hi Warren,

If you can, get hold of an old Rover input shaft they are 1" x 23 spline, that's what I used on my Jag Getrag clutch.
If you can't find one give me a PM & you can borrow mine.

Steve

Clutch Alignment Tool

Craig, I know, both myself and my old man have done this more times than we care to remember. You can guess the gap, about 3/4inch, just the spigot end that will not slot home.

Re-checked alignment, it just won't have it. It's all been together before, the only item changed is the bell housing. My only other thought is to leave it on the studs, put the slave back together and operate the clutch, just to give me a bit of waggling room.

If not it's going to have to come out again and with the steel bellhousing it's a right sod.

Geoff, thanks for the link and Steve, I could well be in touch if I can't get what I need.

Cheers

First and most important thing is have you dialled in the bell housing. This is really important, I had a very similar experience to you and in my ignorance managed to persuade it to all go together. Thing was reverse was a pig to get and then I slowly lost the gears starting with first then second and of course there was the horrendous noise when ever I pushed down the clutch pedal ready to TRY and engage a gear. In the end it destroyed the gearbox and spigot bearing. This time I dialled in the bell housing and was amazed how easily it all went together, and the gear selection is really easy now as well. Leaving out the dowels would be a huge mistake.

Hopefully I have attached a copy of the article I recently wrote for the club mag.

Yes, dialled in. Didn't even leave it to my amateaur efforts, I took the whole lot up to a local V8 specialist, Performance Unlimited and he did it for me.

Sent for a new alignment tool and will have another go next week.

Erm........went to the Holden tool link and saw a cheap clutch alignment thingy..£5 and some change so bought it whilst ordering considerably more expensive alternative elsewhere. So I was curious, shoot me, it was only £11 including VAT & Postage. To anyone else with a curious nature, spend the money on 3.5 pints of lager instead.

This thing is plastice and works by attaching the friction plate to the pressure plate with a dubious taper rod that opens the 'spigot' end up like a rawl bolt. You then turn this over and align the friction plate centrally to the cover plate face using your best visual judgement. You depend on the tightness of these 'plastic' components to then hold it securely in place whilst you bolt it up to the flywheel......oh yes...that'll work...not. I wouldn't even bother with the blood, sweat and tears involved in offering it up, think I'll wait for the real deal to arrive.

Is it just me or is this Cobra ownership thing just a tad tedious..didn't I read somewhere about a valuation service involving the exchange of a crate of beer...circa 20K (too scared to add the invoices up) would've bought me a 600bhp skyline with a proper roof Now, where did I leave my sense of humour
