Clutches Again - Urgent Info Required!

Hi Guys,

Im after some urgent info regarding gearbox installation. I have aligned the plate & clutch & then installed the clutch / bellhousing onto the block. The jag getrag splined shaft slides into the clutch however it stops there & only with a little force, (nipping up the mounting bolts) will it begin to go into the pilot bearing, (I got it about half way along but then became concerned about causing damage). I then retracted the gearbox & noted a slight scuff mark inside the pilot bearing where the shaft enters. Can anyone advise pls if a certain amount of force is required to get the gearbox fully located or should it slide in freely?

Any assistance appreciated.

Regards,
Martyn

Join the club mate, I'm having some real trouble at the moment with the same thing. But to answer your question, the only real force required is that to shove/pull the weight of the box in. You will have some resistance and but the level of friction will be directlty related more to the weight and the splined part rubbing through the spline with the weight of the box trying to pull the shaft off line. If you had absolutely perfect alignment and a box that weighed the same as a bag of sugar it would slot straight in.

It would be worth double checking your alignment whilst you have it out. I'm trying to do this with a fully built car up on stands and the I am sure it's just weight of the box and steel bellhousing that's beating me now.

If you still have access around the chassis, i.e. body not on. Nip the clutch cover so it is holding the pressure plate but not too tight, get a mate to help you and work it in. Then remove as carefully as you can. Tighten the cover plate fully and watch the box slot nicely in when you offer it up again. I couldn't find my alignment tool the first time I put it all together so thats the way I did it.

Good
Luck

Warren,

Thanks for the info & I am happy to advise I have managed to get the gearbox to slide into place without the use of any kind of "persuasion" but by christ what a job!
I managed it by basically doing what you advise below & just gradually manipulating it into place. I think the problem was basically plate to clutch alignment. I may be wrong but I also thought there was a little bit of stiction between the pilot bearing & the snout of the splined shaft? I am fortunate in the fact that my body is not on so I could work around the gearbox so I do not envy you in your position so wish you the best of luck.

Regards,
Martyn
