Spinners

Hi Gents,

now SVA is done and dusted I am fitting the shiny bits.

My raceline spinners have a center section that is held against the wheels with 3 small grub screws, is this the norm as it does not seem very secure, I would hate to loose one at 70mph.

I was thinking of adding a ring of sealant on the inside of the wheel as a bit more security your thoughts please

Image wheels only use two grub screws!

The spinner (on image) is machined so that the grub screws would have to loosen off quite a long way before the spinner can fall off. I don't even tighten the grub screws up very tightly as there is not much of an ali thread around them.

Nothing wrong with sticking them on with sealant aswell as using the screws but as your car is brand new you might be taking the wheels off a few times for tweaking etc...could get messy.

Regards,

Pete.

Well done on the SVA!

If you do the screws up tight to mark the spinner then remove it again you can spot drill the face of the diameter where the screws will go into. Drill a shallow hole slightly bigger diameter than the grub screws, and the point of the grub screw will locate into this and will hold much better than before. Do not drill right through or else the screw will not tighten at all.

My grub screws have a slight point on the end, I tightened mine up so they marked the position on the spinner, I then drilled two small holes in the spinner so the point of the grub screw just slightly went into the hole.

Make sure you put some copper grease on the screws as they tend to seize if not removed frequently

Great minds think alike Mike.

I keep meaning to replace the grub screws in my Image wheels and drill the holes as well. The current grub screws are black steel ones with flat ends.

The three grub screws used to hold the spinners on to my Compomotive HBs are bloody useless too; I've taken to checking them regularly. The hole drilling approach sounds good though. My other thought was to turn up a threaded adapter and drilling/tapping the spinner so that it locates on one big thread like a real spinner.

The first time I had a spinner come off was at speed and it went off like one of those Japanese fighting star things; it could easily have killed someone!

Not only sounds good, it also works, without any expense.

Sorry guys its not the actual spinners I have a problem with its the threaded part that goes onto the wheels that the spinners screw to and it would be impossible to drill

Jeff

I'm now totally confused, the grub screws are usually fitted in the wheel and screw into the spinner, perhaps a picture might help.
