Rear Wishbone needle bearings

Afternoon all,

As bad luck comes in 3's I'll type fast and hope the computer doesn't blow up on me!

Just spent an unproductive afternoon fitting the needle rollers to the rear wishbones and when I came to put the tubes in found that 6 out of the 8 are so tight they a) don't turn b) I can't get the tube through the bearings.

All 6 are now stuffed because they're either deformed or I cracked the race geting them out so I'm well pissed off at the moment. It would appear my bearing holes are no longer round, is this common and if so what's the easiest fix, a dose of the file?

If you're wondering what bad luck 1 was, my turbo blew on the way back from Bristol yesterday

Cheers

Have you had your rear wishbones powder coated and if so did you clear out the holes before you fitted the needle bearings as some of the powder coating might be in there.

Hi Martin,

Not powder coated, hand hammerited by yours truly, but I did spend a most enjoyable half an hour with a stanley knife blade carving all the overspill out before hand.

Cheers

I guess, as the wishbones have been shortened, they may be deformed but it seems a long shot to me.

Have you got a decent vernier calipre? measure the holes in both directions. You are not trying to use the old bearings which came on the wishbones are you? AK re-painted my wishbones after shortening them with the races in and not masked, so they need replacing.

Chris.

If your trying to use the old ones then don`t bother a new set is about £45 from Wards and it`s best to replace now then a year down the road.I`d be surprised if they had warped.

RobinH: yes they are shortend and as per yours the original bearings where in and painted when I received them so I knocked them out.

tony: they are a new set from Wards, basically if it presses in, unscrews or bolts on I replaced it or had it reconned. It would have actually been cheaper to buy a reconned axle set in hind sight, but you live and learn.

Looks I'll be checking the hole diameters then.

Thanks Folks.

Cheers

Chris.

Do you know if the wishbones you exchanged were the same ones you got back.?

Give Ken a ring if he`s supplied you with a problem set he`ll sort it for you I imagine.

tony: Nope they weren't mine I removed all the bearings and grease nipples before I took them in.

The some of the bearings I removed from these where bone dry, no grease and rusted solid would that have heated up the ends enough to distort them under normal use?

If there are any serious problems with them that can't be sorted with a file I'll drop Ken a line.

Cheers
