Clearance, carb to bonnet - GD.

Hi

I am Building a GDJag but I havn't got the body yet. I have a Rover V8 with an edelbrock performer manifold on. I am trying to decide on the carb and need a bit of advice. I am going to put on some Ford Motorsport "Cobra" rocker covers. A Holly 390 will fit straight on but apparently the Weber 500 (my carb of choice) needs a spacer between the carb and the inlet manifold to get the necessary clearance between the covers and the throttle bracket. Not sure how deep the spacer is yet (think is bout 1.5 inches), but I just wondered if someone could provide me with the clearance from the bottom of the valley to the bonnet, or even better, has anyone fitted something similar?

Many Thanks

Martin

Martin, as the Mk4 is a relatively new body for the GD I doubt that any other Rover powered ones are on the road???

I can give you dimensions for the body from the upper cross brace (just above the bellhousing at the back of the engine bay) to the underside of the bonnet where the scoop fits (which scoop are you going to use as I believe there are 3 available?).

Then you just need some one to measure from the same datum as me but who has a rover lump fitted.

Re: Clearance, carb to bonnet - GD.

Hi

Not sure about the scoop. Hadn't really thought that out yet. I was just concerned that if I bought a weber ( if a deal came up) and then it didn't fit under the bonnet because of the spacer I would be a bit miffed Just hoped someone had a similiar build, but you are probably right, the MK4 is a bit new and most exiting ones have american lumps in.
Thanks for the response anyway.

Martin

All depends which heat spacer you decide to fit. The one I fitted consisted of 3 gaskets and 2 thin aluminium plates which made the carb only 5mm higher at most. This type of heat isolator is available from real steel and works really really well ,i did several trips around Europe so I did put it to the test . Of course you can go for the 1" thick variety but it is not necessary really.

Re: Clearance, carb to bonnet - GD.

Hi Tinka

Thanks for the reply. I am getting the "Cobra" Rocker covers from Jim Robinson at JRV8, who has recommended the spacer to get the clearance between the covers and the throttle bracket (weber 500), and he ought to know about Rovers!
Its just the clearance under the bonnet once I have done it that concerns me. There is no real rush as I don't have the body yet but I like to be prepared for any little "hic ups" !!
I just wondered if any GD builders (with RV had come across a similar issue.

Thanks

Martin
