Engine "Platform" to stand engine in off the stand

Hi

I want to take my Rover V8 off the engine stand it has been on for the last 12 months and put it on some kind of stand or box so I can fit the gear box. Has anyone done this with a Rover that can give me some advice? Did you build a stand? Where should it support the engine? I guess the sump should be off the ground? Can you give me some sort of measurements or a plan\drawing?
Has anyone in the Lincoln area got one then can lend me?
Any help or advice, as always, greatly appreciated.

Martin

Hi Martin,
Just set the engine on a board on the ground (with sump attached) and leave it slightly tilted towards the nose. Then fit the flywheel, clutch, and gearbox. When it's fitted , the whole lot will sit quite steady on the floor.
You will need to raise it up afterwards with the crane to fit the two bottom screws , if you're using an SD1 sump with the extension brace.

Hi Jim

Thanks for the reply. I didn't think the sump would support it without some sort of damage. Thanks for that.
I'm not sure what you mean about the "two bottom screws" though? I am using the original SD1 sump.

Best Regards

Martin

I've done exactly the same thing as you're trying to do. I measured up the height of the block from the floor, drew some plans and made a pair of mounts to go on the stand. The advantage of this is the engine is still mobile on the stand, so if it takes another 12 months to do the rest I can move the block about without getting a hernia!

Whatever option you use, you need to bear in mind the box has weight and may tip the engine , so my plan is to make up a bracing bar to go on to the back of the box when it's in place. This may well be a piece of wood!

Hope that helps

Graham

The sump should be fine...... you can always add a few 2 by 4 supports to hold it level..... It should even withstand a 5 year old boy...

Whilst rolling my car off a ramp a few weeks ago it slipped and ended up with the entire weight of the front of the car and the engine gear box resting on the sump which in turn was resting on the threshold of a door way.... no damage done...

use either 3x3 or 4x4 in front of the sump it will tend to fall forward - i've had one like this for over a year no problem put it on the floor - although i must say the frame thingy is really good

I managed to "acquire" a trolley they use to push bread trays around in super markets.

A few pieces of wood placed across the top makes a perfect engine trolley.

I just fitted the engine directly into the chasis, then the box onto the engine that way. I might as well haev done it like that anyway as Ive had to have the box on and off a few times just due tot he fact that Ive pushed the clutch bearing off a couple of times anyway...
