Any machinists/ lathe type folk out there..

....that would be able to turn me an ali steering wheel adapter? I have no stock (nothing of a suitable size anyway) just drawings to go on.

Basically it is an adapter approx 4 1/4" dia x 3"deep for use on my Mota-lita steering wheel to Vauxhall tilt column. I have chsosen to do it the hard way as my column surround is quite a big lump and the use of a Mota-Lita with nine bolt centres hides a lot more than a smaller 6 bolt centered steering wheel. There is no adapter available off the shelf having spoken direct to Mota-Lita last week. I do have the serated drive part already in billet ally that would bolt to the rear face of my intended apadapter.

I will try local machine shops but wondered if we had anyone doing such work within the club that would be willing? Long term plan is to change the whole column for something more period looking but as I am taking far too long to finish the car as it is I am going to run with what I have for now and put the more original mod on as a winter project for the future.

Cheers,

Thanks Andy, I'll see of he picks up on this thread. If not I'll send a pm and see what he says.

I presume CNC would be a massive job as programming would be needed etc? What is the general accuracy/ tolerances used for manual machine work? example being I am working in thou, is accuracy difficult for manual machining? As you can tell I am not machinist!

Thanks Andy for sending the text. I am getting a few post SVA jobs sorted now to save time later

CNC work is very simple these days; you draw the part you want using AutoCad or SolidEdge and then you copy the output file to your machine tool and it makes the part for you! There is no reason why a manual machine (with a decent operator) should be any less accurate than a CNC machine but the process might take longer. Fancy stuff like curves and radii are much quicker with a CNC machine since it will make pretty much anything you can draw.

Hi Lee,

Be careful, Gary adapted an original Rover boss to fit his S/Wheel & SVA wouldn't pass it because it wasn't 'E' marked!
Unless you're going to retro-fit it.

Hi Ian,

Picked up the thread (via Andy)

Shouldn't be a problem and tolerances not a problem, can work on my lathe and mill down to around .03 thou no problem.

Have you got any drawings etc.If so send them either via PM or e-mail.
