Which sat nav, Garmin or TomTom

Looking for a sat nav for next years Lemons trip, so far i've found two that seem to do all i need.
But I'm undecided between the TomTom GO 720 and Garmin 660.
Both are packed full of features such as:
Bluetooth, street name commands, widescreen, speed cameras and Traffic Monitoring.

The TomTom has the added bonus of transmitting through the cars stereo, but I've heard horror stories about TomTom's locking up after a few weeks

Any advice which to go for guys

I have had a Tom Tom 300 for a couple of years and it is great.

No problems at all.

I had it upgraded to cover mid/western Europe and used it in northern Spain this year where it performed really well.

I have no experience of Garmin but I do know they are a very highly respected manufacturer.

Cheers

I have both; the wife likes the garmin I prefer the TomTom; mainly I think that the voice instructions are better, ie it will tell you the next two turnings if they are close together; easier to be in the right lane. The wife says its confusing.
The garmin is better on the map side; you can leave it on different scales; this is more usful as a marine navigator but also has its advantages for roads if looking for an alternate route, the TomTom keeps returning to its default scale.

My Tom Tom (known as Dick Dick in our house) has chucked in after only a couple of months. The charge light comes on when it's plugged into the car, but it won't switch on.
It was quite useful in France and Italy, but I don't use it here.
Download the John Cleese voice for a more interesting journey.

Hi Neil

On the back there is a reset button, you have to put pin or small wire in the hole to reset unit, give that a try, Andy.

Neil have you used the soft re-start button, mine will lock up in the off position very occasionally - normally when I haven't used it for a while.

I have just stated using the traffic alert system on my Tom Tom......brilliant, has saved me several hours due to holdups on motorways over the last 3 journeys made, each one being approx 500 miles round trip. Cost per journey using the mobile phone network approx £0.80 per journey.

Rich it depends what you want from it, but I wouldnt discount the Navman either.
Had my F series for some months now and its been brilliant, comes with the whole of europe already loaded, and when I was looking was the best value against TT & Garmin.

You pays your money and takes your choice

HI I run a Navman N60i which is fully loaded with all the european road maps and it works a dream. I use it on a weekly basis for work around europe. One nice little feature is there is socket for a headset so you can here where you are going when in a cobra over your side pipes

Thanks for you comments guys, I'll look into the Navman as well, although i did discount it originally because a work colleague has one and it takes forever to find its self and when it does its a mare to find the address [ he might have a duffa]

Both of the units I've been looking at are around £270 but this one on ebay might be worth buying cos at that price it must be a special one

Garmin 660 on Ebay
