Jag Lower Wishbone mystery?

Hi (sorry put this in the engine part by mistake as well!!)

I have nearly finished assembling my Jag rear axle which is now fitted to my GD chassis. When I came to put the spacer on the bottom of the shock, I realised that the spacer is on the front on the offside and rear on the nearside! The axle definately came of the same car as I picked it up myself and dismantled it. Talking to other builders they seem to have the short part of the shock shaft tube at the front on both sides. on mine the short shock shaft tube is at the rear on one side and the front on the other. Everything seems to line up If I put the spacer on the long tube on one side and on the short tube on the other, but can anyone explain why this is? The obvious has been checked........they are on the right way up (grease nipples underneath) and the redundant brackets both face forward.

Thanks

Martin

In a word no.

My car has both the spacers on the front, The radius arms are at the front and all the grease nipples face downwards.
Cant see why your ones different.

Craig.

Have they turned one lower wishbone over when they had them apart to narrow them, ie, welded one on 180 degrees from where it was?

Do GD narrow the rear axle like Dax do?

The reason one tube is shorter than the other is to allow the bolt that holds the radius arm to go into place. This is a special bolt with one side of the head cut away to allow it to clear the shorter tube.
If it was manufactured with the longer tube on the front then Jaguar wouldn't have been able to assemble the car.
The hole in the radius arm bracket should like up with a tapped hole in the cast hub mounting.
Check it still does.

Craig.

I guess GD don't install radius arms either?

Craig.

There are some really nice looking billet lower wishbones for sale on the US Cobra Club website:

They state that they are for a Contemporary, but the one I had used standard Jag lower control arms.

Guys

I am blind as well as stupid!!!! I have just had another look and indeed the short parts of the shock shaft tube BOTH point towards the front!! What confused me (which is quite easy) is that I had to put the spacer onto the longer part of the tube on the Off Side in order to line the dampers up with the GD brackets at the top. I guess I could pack them with washers but I expected them to line up better that that.

Sorry for any confusion

Martin

Excellent build diary you've got there Martin. Jag IRS is a black art until you've done it once then it's doddle .... like most things I guess

I'm sure this might appear in 'sucking eggs' territory, but watch out if considering these as upgrades, as the length may not be what you need for your cob.

The Americans seem to believe that making stuff out of billet is always a good idea, I blame Boyd Coddington. Sometimes it's neat, other times it looks rather crude and clunky. These are seriously expensive and I doubt whether they perform as well as standard ones.
