Steering UVs

At the Donnington show I saw someone with one of his steering column universal joints apparently attached to the chassis, inside the offside wing.

This was really neat and I would like to do the same. Unfortunately I have no idea who's car I was looking at!

Anyone have any idea how this was achievd? I need to run my column over to the chassis before proceeding on to the rack in order to clear my exhaust headers. The 'offset' will also likely please the nice SVA man.

No mate. The column appeared to have a UV joint about half way down which was fixed to the chassis. Your link takes me to track rod ends.

I think Paul is suggesting the shaft is held onto the chassis via a spherical bearing.
This is positioned close to the UV joint on a GD.
If you think about it you can`t really fix the UV joint or else it loses its function.

I'm pretty certain it's something that pilgrim do to get around the headers they use for the RV8 (possibly with the Mk II chassis)

I can't a photo at the moment but someone else might be able to help.

Huge apologies. I think you must be right. I had assumed that the UV was held by some sort of bearing. It makes much more sense that the shaft was held in a bearing.

the "shaft held in a spherical bearing" is a common fit on many GD, used to take the steering column around headers, and waterpumps .

ensure a tolerence fit on the shaft, (I knurled the shaft), press the bearing in place.

I think GD leave a bracket on the chassis, as this is so often done

A picture would be helpful anyone (of the steering shaft held by a mounted bearing. Rather than some random anatomical features)

Wink

Just to pretend to be a smartarse for once, can I ask if 'transmission by wire' has been skipped over and we have jumped straight to transmission by wave?

The idea of steering via UltraViolet connection scares me a little so I'll stick to UJs until the new technology has been fully tested.

Funny you should say that Jeremy, I was thinking along the same lines.
