Side Pipe Rattling driving me nuts

Hi guys,

got a wee problem thats driving me nuts, my pipes keep on rattling against the body work, I probably think that there isnt enough clearance.

Setup is, 4into1 manifold, into flexipipe into single collector through bodywork, supported by (used to be 2) 1 rubber bung job at the end of the pipe.

I think its rattling against the eschution plates (which are stainess and round), to which Ive cut away the body as a template.

Should I be triming some of the eschution away do you think?

How much clearance do I need?

cheers
Ben

If you have a flexible pipe between the manifold and the sidepipe, I would suggest you go back to the two mount system. The reason I, and a number of others, switched to a single mounting was because we have a solid exhaust pipe setup with no room to allow the slight rocking of the engine.

Ben,

I much prefer the single mount method, if yiu use a mount at the front you are in effect trying to use the pipes as an engine stay, on my setup this caused the pipe mounting bolt to be ripped off the pipe.

Are you sure that it isn't the baffles rattling inside the pipes?

Regards,

Pete

Hi guys,

Im not too bothered either way about using 2 mounts, I only swapped to one to see if it made any difference but it didnt. I may well put it back on anyway in case the rubber splits or something then its gunna go flying.

But if any of you could perhaps measure up your clearance between the pipe and the body then it would give me somethign to work towards, I think I may well end up getting some bigger eschutions (dunno how to spell it obviously)....

Side pipes

If its the baffles within the sidepipes its a problem I have had on my Dax. However I have now fixed it. The baffles were held at the end by a long self tapping screw which held the end cap on and secured the baffle. This kept coming loose so first of all I welded a nut inside the end cap to allow easy fitting and refitting with a bolt. I then welded the 2" spacer ring more securely into the end cap. It was previously only held by three tack welds. I then removd the end cap and slipped a 2+" jubilee clip over the baffle. I adjusted this until the end cap trapped the baffle by pressing it against the front end of the side pipe. I then drilled and pop rivetted the jubilee clip in place. So far this has worked and the baffle tubes no longer slide backwards or rattle. Hpe that sounded as simple as it was to do.

Cheers

morning guys,

nope its not the baffles as I dont have any, just packed with wire wool and what not, and if I wedge something between the pipe and the body it stops.

It sounds like the flexi pipe isn't clamped tight to the side pipe to me. My pipes are all solid, but a freind has the flexi pipe connection and it was always causing strange noises.

Hi Ben

I started with about 5mm of clearance between the pipes and the body but as the engine moved in it's mounts they hit the body.
I have the Dax supplied pipes which are rigidly mounted to the engine and supported only at the rear of the sidepipe.

I changed my engine mounts for polyurethane mounts made by Energy suspension...

And increased the clearance between the pipes and the body to about 12-15mm

Luckily I didn't get the body painted before I used the car!

Craig.

Hi Ben,

Are you saying that you have no tube running down the middle of each sidepipe? Your pipes are just stuffed with wire wool and the exhaust gas percolates through it?

Anyway my pipes are about an inch away from the body work and there is about 10mm clearance all around the elbow as it passes through the body work and plate type thing (that I can't spell either!)

HTH,

Pete

Hi Pete,

yup thats what Im saying, there is a little baffle at the end about a foot long, but the rest is stuffed with (I know I said wire wool)... fibreglass stuff rolled with chicken wire (take that out after the sva).

Cheers all for the clearance info, will need to expand it out, I haev only about 5mm here and there (at the elbow bit)
