Final plea - gear shift

Third attempt now but not really got any suggestions so far, so I'll try one more time if I may.

Where can I get a Tremec T56 gear shift lever in stainless? I've given up on the hope that I'll get one bent to my liking so will have to do that myself, but still haven't found anywhere that does a plain gear shift lever. Surprisingly I'm not even being particularly fussy on this one because I'm resigned to the fact that it will likely need some modification!!

Thanks in advance,

Jon

Hi Jonny,

I'd have said you want a back street under-the-arches type jobbing shop...have you got a photo of what your current one looks like? I might be able to think of someone local if I can see whats involved.

How much do you need to bend it ?
Are you going to use a gaiter and cover it all up?
e bay normally have a good few choices of aftermarket parts which may just need the bend you want.

Trouble is I don't even know what I'm looking for on ebay, because I don't know what the fitting is! Any suggestions will be gratefully received!

We will have a gaiter too - covering it up, although we are using the original Cobra gaiter as it suits the car so the lever may have to have a collar and I suspect that teh bend will not be covered.

Thanks

ebay - type in T56 plus gear shift and you will get a selection gear stick choices amongst others.
The fitting is two bolt from the box and produced by milling away half the bar diameter to form a flat fixing surface.

Easy to make.
Buy 300mm 5/8 s/s bar, approx £4-6
Sand it now with 380grit on a da or 600/800 W&D first and then machine mop polish.
Machine thread 1/2 unf on to one end of bar, this will accept original gear knob. Cut to approx length.
If you can't get a bit of 30x15x50 flat bar in s/s use mild steel.
Drill pilot holes for gear lever stub hole centres in flat bar.
Machine flat on bottom of s/s bar.
Silver solder block onto bar. Silver solder will join mild steel to s/s.
If you cant do this take it to a local welder and get it tigged.
Drill finish size bolt holes for gearlever stub.
Bolt into place.
Bend if reqd.
Repolish

gd made mine, piece of stainless, bent, drilled with a thread on the end for the ball....

took 20 mins

also the original rubber style gaitor. had a lot of difficulty fitting that as there is so much more movement in the t56 gears (7 incl reverse) compared to other boxes. IK found the rubber limited gearshift accuracy as I was forcing the stick to flex the rubber along way.

ended up using a leather gaitor,

Thanks all,

I might have to use a leather gaiter in the end in which case I will be more than pleased to return it to Europa and receive the refund of the ridiculous amount of money that it cost me! I have to say though that I had previously assumed that the leather would be additional, the rubber gaiter actually sealing the car from the road ?

I always get confused - is UNF the same as whitworth, or is that UNC. If it isn't whitworth - has anyone got a 1/2 UNF tap floating around in the bedfordshire area that I could use if I get stuck?

Thanks again guys - looks like its another weekend in the garage making bits again!
