However, I always did wonder about the use of ATF in an "old" box like the Rover unit, surely they were designed to use an EP oil to begin with?
I assumed (wrongly as usual) that the ATF was the oil in the torque converter and some other oil was in the actual gearbox.

Still like you say I think that the LT77 box was designed for a normal EP oil and that other boxes such as the tremec may have been designed to run on ATF.

I guess this sort of banter never really has an anwser, I will stick with my Redline MTL and others can stick ATF in their boxes if they like. (Gearbox or any other 'box' that they wish to lube up )

Me neither - some ladies are just too polite.

Didn't think you knew any females that qualified as "ladies"?

Taken from Rimmer Brothers:

Gearbox Unit (5 Speed)

Manual Gearbox Identification
There are two manual gearboxes fitted to the SD1 range - a 4-speed and a 5-speed. We have concentrated here on the 5-speed version because of the rarity of 4-speed models. However, as the 4-speed is essentially a 5-speed with fewer internals, it would be a simple matter to fit a 5-speed 'box in place of a 4-speed. There were a number of changes affecting gearbox internals over the years and many parts are not interchangeable. Therefore, it is important to identify your gearbox by the number stamped on the left hand side - the vital figure being the suffix A, B, C or D.

Gearbox Oil
Early 4 & 5 speed models used SAE75W oil. From approximately 1980 onwards, Rover used automatic gearbox oil (ATF) in the manual gearbox, to help improve gear selection from cold. Our reconditioned 5-speed gearboxes use ATF.
The oil capacity is 1.5 litres.

Unipart ATF (0.5 litre) - (ar) - GGL175

As for the ladies............
