Steering rack oil

Can anyone remind whether to put oil in the steering rack bellows and if so, what type and quantity? Thanks.

AFAIK it`s just grease (not sure which type).
That is unless you have power steering.

Hi Bob,
You dont put oil in the gaitors/bellows they are just there to stop crap getting onto the rack ends as they exit the rack itself,if you filled them with oil you would end up with a baloon instead of a gaiter on full lock, the rack itself usually has ep70/90 gear oil in it.but there it no normal filler hole.you would have to remove a top plate but this would depend on what type of rack you are using.I take it you ar,nt talking about a power rack!.
Regards
Alfie B

I have always put grease (general purpose, high melting point) into my racks.

Although I believe Jordan puts silicon into hers.

I had an originally oil filled steering rack rebuilt some years ago by Delphi (I think). On it's return a small plug was missing and you could hear air escaping when the rack was moved from side to side. Clearly if Air was escaping Oil could too. I rang up to complain and was told that Racks are greased for life these days with a grease called STERAK (STEering RAcK)
It would appear it's made by Shell but where you would get small quantities I know not....
