Jag rear brake upgrade

Hi Guys,

A while back there was a thread about upgrading brakes. I don't intend to go the AP route as it will be mainly a road car, but someone did mention that replacing the rear solid discs with vented versions was a major improvement.

Can anyone tell me where I can get vented rear discs from please? Wards and Gordons do drilled versions but not vented.

Also who sells Pagid brake pads?

Wouldnt vented discs require new wider calipers, and can you get wider calipers to fit?

IIRC its a bugger to get the old normal size calipers to fit never mind any wider versions. Perhaps there is an opportunity here for a vented disc rear brake conversion using a more modern single piston caliper ?

Cheers,

Tony

Yes that's the one I was thinking of but it doesn't mention vented rear discs. It must have been another thread.

Spoke to Ed at Wards and he said that he used to do a vented kit many years ago but did not think it was worthwhile unless you were doing some serious track work.

Tony, just had a look at the Jag rear set up and you're right, there is not enough room for a vented disc. You would have to replace the caliper and then probably lose the handbrake.

If anyone knows any different let me know?

You can still get the vented disc kits from the likes of E type specialists. They do an exchange widened caliper in them.

You will get nearly as much benefit just by fitting some air deflectors under the car to force air up and over the standard discs and calipers. If you look at some racing replica Cobs, you will see all sorts of ducting arrangements(some coming through the boot lid!) to achieve this. Either that or they fit an outboard conversion, as the heat from heavily-worked inboard brakes bu**ers up the diff output shaft seals anyway.

Or you could fit XJ40 uprights and halfshafts to get outboard brakes which are a bit easier to play around with and cool.
