Lucas DLM8

I have a Lucas DLM8 Dissy (the one with the module attached to the side of the dissy) on the RV8, before I start up for the first time I wonder whether someone could help me with a little info. In order to set up the timing correctly, does the module sit in between the valley, or outside the left cylinder bank. The dissy won't rotate round because the module comes into contact with the cylinder head, so it has to be one or the other. None of the pictures I have seen with DLM8s are clear enough to tell. Many thanks

It doesn't matter where the module or advance can sit relative to the head really.

Set engine to tdc, no1 firing.

Install the distributor in a positon so you have maximum available rotation - usually module towards the middle of the engine, advance can pointing roughly forwards/nearside.

Then rotate it so it's in the mid point of the available travel.

What ever pole on the cap that the rotor arm is pointing at is now HT lead no1. Add the rest of the leads in sequence 18436572.

You now have at set-up that will probably start and allow you to set the timing on a light without having to pull the distributor and move it round a tooth etc.

HTH

Lucas DLM8

Thanks Russ,
I have noted from a previous comment by Jim (JRV that there are 2 types of DLM8, one has the module at 45 deg to the vac unit, one has it 180 deg. Mine is 180 deg and Jim states that only the 45 deg unit with work on the SD1 engine. Any thoughts?

The problem I think is with fouling both the head and the main coolant outlet from the manifold. My distributor has the advance can and module at 180 and it works fine - however, I have a Defender type front cover (pump slightly different position/shape) and an Edelbrock manifold.

In any case, if you position it so you have max available rotation, then you ought to be able to time it as long as it's close to start with.

Russ
