Just to echo two points, I have a set of number and letter stamps you can borrow for the cost of the carriage. Also, my Crendon just passed with a riveted chassis plate and the tester said it was no problem.
It just so happens that the chassis number is also stamped under the plate, but before powder coating, so the ally plate is more visible anyway...

Punching Chassis Numbers

My Last Sumo failed the local DVLA inspection in Carlisle,(beware Toddy) they said the numbers must be punched into a chassis rail,(I had 1 stamped plate from Pilgrim)on the bulkhead (rivetted) and also a printed foil one on the chassis, and they made me get it stamped before they would pass it, this test was only conducted because I was removing the number prior to parting with the car, I got my mate to stamp it into the RH front suspension bracket, and when the inspector wanted to inspect it she nearly refused to kneel down to read it!!.I suppose it depends on the examiner, but next time I will be stamping the number on the chassis rail in the boot.

When the DVLA lady looked at mine , she couldnt read it so she made me read it out while she checked it off against what was written on the form !
I think she just wanted to see me bent over the car , you know what these sexist lady workwomen are like

Officially, you only need a riveted plate for SVA but the number should be stamped directly into the chassis for the DVLA.
But we all know what the DVLA are like for knowing their own rules at times.
