Question What gear box have I got?

Hi Guys I have a small problem with the gear box. When I'm changing down gears from third to second I keep shoving it through the reverse gate. I need to find out what box it is so I can replace the gate spring. I have a 3.5 RV8 fitted, any help appreciated.

Post a picture of your box and selector remote. Most 3.5 SD1 had an LT77 if 5 speed, but when fitted in a Cob the remote differs from a shortened SD1 to a Sherpa van type and others.

This is only pic I have at the moment, also the bolt you can see in the center of the mounting bracket seems to be just a bolt with a piece of rubber round it and not a proper mounting bush, is this correct?

Yep, it looks like an SD1 LT77. That is an SD1 gear box mount you have and the centre bolt goes through a rubber bobbin that locates into a hole in the cross member. I believe this is to limit the movement of the tail end of the gearbox.

As for your gear selector remote, I can't really comment as it is not visible.

When I had my old RV8 & LT77 I had a similar problem, in the end I changed the gear stick to one that looked original but was actually functional so you had to lift the bar to be able to get it in reverse, and that solved the problem. Can post some pictures of what I did if you want, think I have some somewhere. HTH

If you have the shortened SD1 remote, it is only a case of setting the spring pressure with a couple of bolts and lock nuts. All in the Haynes manual for the Rover. I set mine so you had to snap it across to get reverse.
