Starter motor

I started the engine today after the overhaul and generally ran smoothly, the hydraulic tappets are still a little noisy.

But the starter was sometimes very slow to turn over and in the end a fuse blew, after the fuse was changed however the starter engaged straight away as soon as the ignition lights were turned to on the key.

All earth straps are ok too

Am I right in thinking dodgy solonoid or starter...?

Hi Stu,

Do you mean the starter engaged when you turned on the ignition, without turning the key to the start position??
Was it ok before the overhaul, are all the connections ok at the starter motor?

Yes Mark the engine turns over without going to the start position, I am thinking along the lines of the starter switch maybe... but this is new too and it worked fine before.

It just confused me why the engine turned over slow 4 times out of 6 and is why I thought starter/solonoid at first.

Hi Stu,
If the starter engages when you turn the keys on and releases when the keys are off the solenoid is probably fine.
If it all worked ok before the engine came out I woundn't think there's much wrong, have you double checked the wiring at the starter motor, if the connections are all ring terminals maybe the solenoid wire and one of the lives are swapped. Maybe worth getting a wiring diagram and checking through the starter circuit.

Hope this helps mate,,

All sorted.....

I put a bigger amp fuse in the circuit which solved the slow turn over and basically there was a short on the starter switch after pulling the dash out previously.

The tapping was not the tappets, it was the half moon gearbox plate catching on the flywheel. After a bit of leveridge from my best screwdriver all is fixed.

I gave myself a big pat on the back after doing the engine overhaul with a new gearbox at the same time too, and it runs as sweet as new with response time out of this world.

The sound with my sidepipes is an added advantage.

Well done lets hope that is the last of your problems now and you can move on to the SVA. Which office are you going to take your car to?
