Stainless steel tubing?

Hi All

When I built my car originally I used the flush type filler cap mounted in the rear deck behind the roll bar. Soon after the SVA I realised I didn't really like it so I fibre glassed in a recess supplied by Dax and fitted a nice Aston type filler in the wing top.

I did stick with the same fuel tank though so what used to be a straight pipe run turned into a long S shape tube. This works fine and doesn't cause any problems during filling but it looks a bit nasty and is quite vulnerable in the boot when doing the weekly shopping.

I would like to weld together a few Stainless steel bends and make a rigid pipe with a short rubber joiner at each end. I could then polish the pipe and the welds to a shine and it will give me something else to use the Autosol on!

Where can I get good quality stainless bends from in 2" size? I have heard of Dairy pipe but anyone know where it can be brought at a reasonable cost?

Cheers

Craig.

These people might be able to help:

Tube Manipulation, Metal Fabrication, Metal Furniture, Balustrade by Pipecraft

I used them some years ago and found them very helpful. They're in West Sussex.

If you can find someone with CNC scanning and bending you can get the piece made up in one which looks great. I had one done for the same fuel filler application (but on a Ram). I have them the crappy welded up job that I'd been using and they scanned it and produced this, a great improvement.

Hi Craig, among other preparations while my body remains un-fitted I am looking at the fuel filler, after a search I saw this thread of yours. Did you manage to improve the filler pipe? Do you think it might be better to reposition the filler neck on my Dax tank? At the moment it has not had fuel in it and I may be able to move it to the side?
I have the wing recess also, not cut the hole yet, the rear wheel arch finishes right in the middle of the filler recess?
is this right??
Cheers Richard

I am helping a friend build his Dax at the moment and he has welded up the original filler hole and it is now been moved to the side, only extra thing we needed to do was to weld in a couple of breathers so that the air can get out when it is filled right to the very top. I did the same mod to my AK and it is surprising how much extra room it gives in the boot not having the fuel pipe in the way all the time, and it works really well when filling up with fuel. HTH

I moved mine back a little when I fitted it so it just misses the inner wheel arch and exits in the boot. Probably not exactly correct but think it looks ok. I wasn't sure about wheel clearance if I put it in the arch itself with. I'd planned to do what you and Tinka are suggesting about repositioning the filler pipe.

I was seriously worried about cutting that hole but in the end, its was dead easy. Just bonded the recess to the underside, cut a rough hole and then used a dremel with a little drum sanding attachment. Finished by sanding with paper held to a piece of steel plate bent to the right radius. One of those (few) jobs that went right!!
