Don't know the correct term

What is the correct term , so I can search for the symptom of engine running on a little after I have turned the key off.

Not still running whilst I am back in the house having a cup of tea but does run on a couple of revolutions after I turn off.

Did not do this yesterday of course only does it today whilst the sun is out !

I think the full technical term is 'running on'.

Have a look at this.

Running on - what causes it?

Running on is usually caused by too high idle speed. First thing is to try lowering the tick over.

I think it is called pre-ignition, it is when the engine runs on after switching off. My escort I had when I was a we nipper used to do this. If I remember correctly it has some think to do with the timing set up and fueling. I'm sure some one will be along soon who will be able to help more than myself.

It can also be caused by hot spots, which might be the symptom of a more serious problem. Can’t see having a tick over speed set too high causing it though.

Hi David just looked this up on net. sounds to me like a timing issue. But I'm no wizz at these things.

Key Definitions

Detonation
Detonation is the spontaneous combustion of the end-gas (remaining fuel/air mixture) in the chamber. It always occurs after normal combustion is initiated by the spark plug. The initial combustion at the spark plug is followed by a normal combustion burn. For some reason, likely heat and pressure, the end gas in the chamber spontaneously combusts. The key point here is that detonation occurs after you have initiated the normal combustion with the spark plug.
Pre-ignition
Pre-ignition is defined as the ignition of the mixture prior to the spark plug firing. Anytime something causes the mixture in the chamber to ignite prior to the spark plug event it is classified as pre-ignition. The two are completely different and abnormal phenomenon.

Here is the whole article. It is a word document and should down load when link is clicked.

Running on is usually caused by having the ignition too far advanced. Back it off slightly.

I think I cured it by reducing the idle, it was at 1200 , now at 900 does not seem to do it.
I know I should know this but which way do you turn the dissy to retard it a bit.
