First thought would be Treble Check your timing (re pre ignition thread). If it "is" over advanced it "will" run hot. It just seems more than coincidental that you have both symptoms.

Just one more thing, you have driven 75 miles with a brand new engine, which will still be tight, it is far too early to tell much really. Wait till you have done at least 500 miles until you start this process unless something glaringly obvious starts to show up.

Ah Chris as ever your INTERNET diagnosis appears to be correct.

Gave up with timing light and gave the distributor a tweak in both directions and a drive to see how if felt.

Turning it clockwise was worse and it did not like it.

Back to the mark I had made and the a little anti clockwise and it felt much better. Now engine runs more smoothly in lower revs and hey presto it is cool again. Tick over 85-90 and 80-85 on the dual carriage way. Does not creep up whilst ticking over either.

Oil pressure........ made a wire to ensure I have a good earth off the sender unit body and hey presto the oil pressure is better than before. 75 on start up 50 on dual cabbage way and 30 at hot tick over. ( and very low revs)
Engine will also tick over much more smoothly now down as low at 600 if you want, set it at 800.

Finally even after a moderate thrash just now( taking it easy on new engine) there is no run on after turn off.

Seems as though the distributor had moved a little over the past few weeks , marked it now and snugged it down nicely.

Off to do some miles this week if it stays dry and the fuel tanker can keep up with me .

David

My Pleasure David. Enjoy Sometimes we overlook the obvious. Like maybe the Cam gear and Dizzy drive have just bedded in. So the timing has altered a few degrees

Dependant on how accurate the timing marks are on the damper with a Stroker Crank! The extra stroke will move the mark on a standard damper. The only real way is to DTI it at TDC on No1 and compare it with the marks

When I check it with a light and is says 8 BTDC or 10 or 7 or whatever, what does this compare against ?

I know I must not go beyond a number (35 I believe it was) and the distributor can advance 24. I am at 10 now so just ok.

However If I know specifically where I am at tick over what do I compare this to ?
Visard Chevy book says 8-10 degrees, so not that specific.

Surely the magic number is engine specific ?

thanks for the help

Like Chris says, if the timing marks are not that accurate then there is not that much point in using a timing light, except as a reference if you need to reset the timing in the future. As long as it is not pinking and it starts ok then having the timing wrong is only going to cost you max power.

Hi David

Good to hear the car's running and getting some use now. We will have to meet up sometime.

The timing on my car is set at 10 degrees BTDC at tick over with the vacuum advance pipe disconnected. It advances to about 35 degrees BTDC when revved up to about 3000 revs.
Your engine should be similar.

Tick over is good about 750 - 800 revs.

Have fun

Craig.
