Craig and Chris, just read back what I typed and just to be sure there is no misunderstanding I am extremely grateful for both of your generous help over the last few months. You have both been very helpful and generous with your time indeed.

Don't want you to think I was saying ..ohh it's blown up and it's your fault !

It hasn't yet by the way

David

Didn't think that for a minute Dave

No problem with helping you out the couple of times I did. The barbeque more than made it worthwhile.

We need to organise a meet sometime between Horsham and Crawley. There must be quite a few of us in the area now?

Craig.

another way to set the timing is with a vacuum gauge - it is approximate but at this point as you can not be sure of anytiming it will ensure you are in the correct ball park - check this link out for info on how to do it.

use to use it on the rubbish we use to import from england - mgbs, triump spitfires etc

http://www.centuryperformance.com/tu...e-spg-148.html

has good information using vacuum gauge for tuning

Hi David

Good to see you again yesterday. Shame the spark plugs were the wrong type.

Have you had a look here? Mallory

There is loads of Mallory instructions available for download.

Just to remind you my car is set at 20 degrees BTDC at tick over and advances to 34-35 degrees at full mechanical advance.

Seems to run very happy at this point and starts easily too.

Craig.

Craig Many thanks and no problem, your plugs are clearly inferior to mine, the shorter plugs are necessary when running three wipers.

I did find this website last night and have printed off a pdf that shows you how to limit the advance, had a quick go just now and it is very easy.

However can't try it out as a spark plug missing. I have ordered some on line as I break one every four I take out.

The heads are Pro Action Heads and take a Champion RV12YC or a NGK 2423.
It is a short reach one less than 1/2 inch and has a tapered seat rather than a crushable washer. Horsham motor factors had none yesterday and I could not be bothered to go all the way to real steel so I will polish it today instead.

Two years building an SVA a registration and a sunny day and a £2 plug stops me.
I will keep some stock in future.

David. RV12YC is equivalent to an NKG BPR6FS (I use them ) Worth checking again with your factors or local Halfrauds Be a shame to waste a glorious day like today "Polishing"

Got a spark plug today , in fact a whole box of them and a proper tool so I don't keep breaking them, anyway back on thread.

I have established TDC and have confirmed the timing marks are good. I have also limited the advance of the dizzy so I am at about 18 at tick over, engine is smooth here and responsive and goes out to about 32.

Just did a 20 mile run and it shifts very nicely.

Car runs well now and temp is constant, does not rise and oil pressure is good also. So I think I am starting to win. It still is a bit hot I guess 95-100 on the gauge, but I don't know how good the gauge is , and I have less than 200 miles on the clock. It does not appear that hot when I stop and the coolant all stays in quietly.

I do have a question though, which way up does the thermostat go in. I am putting it spring side down into the manifold. Is this correct? In fact I will even go one further , which way is the water going around, is it hot in the top of the rad and cooler out the bottom or the other way around?

Thanks David

Dave, Give it a bit more timing @36 and you'll find it will run a bit cooler. You'll also find your gauge is not reading correctly. I found this out when I put my coolant sensor in a boiling kettle. I measured the resistance at 100c If I remember corectly it was 55ohms. I then got my engine red hot and it was reading 3/4 gauge and I was no where near the 55ohm boiling point of water. More like 95c. So between the 90c middle of the gauge and 95c is 3/4 of the gauge =5c not very linner!! I though I had a overheating issue for years running at I thought 120c.
