Timing

Chaps
you may recall last weekend having to adjust the timing a little to get it to run well.
Only moved it about 3 mm from the original position and it runs , starts and does not overrun. Engine is smooth and powerful.

Just went to test where this actually was and it says 35 !! degrees at tick over and 60 degrees at 2000 revs. Can't be right !!

I assume it would not really run if this was the case.

Assuming this is in fact not the case, starts perfectly and runs very well. Timing on number one lead ?

Am I going mad ?

should not have done this on Friday 13th should I.

How old is your harmonic balancer if it is old it could have slipped as the outer ring (with the timing marks on) is only bonded to the inner bit. Even if it is not it might have slipped. First thing you need to do is find out this turn the engine over till it is at TDC, you can do this with a dial gauge down the spark plug hole on number one cylinder, once you have achieved this see where the timing pointer is pointing at. Plus is the timing mark pointer in the correct position, I have seen some mounted in the wrong place or even the wrong pointer. HTH

I bet your timing pointer is in the wrong place, as Tinka suggested. Do you know how to check it? (will save me some typing if you do.............)

If it is in the wrong place it has moved Chris ( PurpleAK) and Craig (Craggle) set the timing for me and I did see about 8-10 BTDC when they did.
It is far from that now with only the smallest tweak on the dizzy.

I will see what tomorrow brings when it is not the 13th

Thank you to all for your suggestions

From memory David, We only set it to the marks that were there What Wilf is suggesting, and also my concerns Re the overheating issues, Is are the timing marks accurate? Only a DTI @ TDC compared with the timing marks you have can confirm this

We did indeed set it at the marks on the pointer and then we ran it at high revs to break the cam in. Higher revs are more tolerant of timing inaccuracies and we didn't try re-starting or checking it afterwards.

Possibly a dodgy position sensor on the timing cover.

Craig.
