Fitting Electric Fan

HiCan anyone advise on the fitting of a Fan to my GD based Cobra? I have a Rover engine and a Rad provided by GD which I have fitted all ready. Is it best to have the fan in front or behind the rad? Also, what is the best way of attaching it? I have read on the forum that the "pull through" type fitting provided with most Fan kits can damage the rad. What is the best option instead of that?ThanksMartin

Cooling fans work better if they pull air throught the radiator - you will need to specify that when you order yours. Also, mounting the fan to a bracket is a better idea than the "kenlowe" type through-radiator fixings, which have been known to damage radiator matrices. (because they get loose and let the fan move up and down with road shocks)

whatever method you use, just make sure to prevent any possibility of chafing or fretting of the fan against the rad, as the fand do tend to vibrate a little, and the ali won't take much to wear or crack.

as you have gathered already, the "through the fins" fitting tends to induce leaks for some, and is easily avoided with a little work

If you have the GD rad, in ali. there is plenty of room to add fan mounts on the top and bottom rails

Hi Steve

It's not an ally rad but I did get it from GD. There seems to be some space top and bottom, and looking at SimonR's blog that should be enough. Bit scary with a drill though, could really mess it up if I'm not carefull!!

put a thick offcut of metal behind where you are drilling to protect the rad..........

the drill can catch easily on thin sheet and pull through

Thumbs up GD rad fit

Martin

I have a GD and altered the rad by adding 2 lengths of steel rod top to bottom (local rad repair shop did it ) and fitting rivnuts to attach the spal low profile fans.

Regards

David
