Hi Martin,

It is recommended to use ATF in these boxes but I use 75 / 90 in mine.
Can't remember the make but it improved the gear change from ATF.
Not sure the amount but think it's about 2 - 2.5 litres.
I will check later if no one else post's the answer.
Hope this helps.

Regards Phil.

Search facility on the forum is your friend.

Gearbox Oil
Early 4 & 5 speed models used SAE75W oil. From approximately 1980 onwards, Rover used automatic gearbox oil (ATF) in the manual gearbox, to help improve gear selection from cold. Our reconditioned 5-speed gearboxes use ATF.
The oil capacity is 1.5 litres.

Martin,
I would use 75/90 full synthetic oil the type I use in mine is Mobil I , I would'nt use ATF it was only used to help cold gear selection, and exagerates wear on the bearings, the filler plug is near the tail of the gearbox and is also a level plug so just fill it until it runs out..

"1980 onwards, Rover used automatic gearbox oil (ATF) in the manual gearbox"

But note that LR suffered so much warranty with ATF in the boxes, that they later engineered their own trans oil spec (with Texaco?), MTF94, specifically for this box. Improved cold shift AND the benefits of 'proper' oil for lubrication. MTF94 is a semi synth 75/90 gear oil . . . .
