Re-registering my cobra

I wasn't sure where to post this but i thought this part of the forum has most viewers.

I have a Q plate on my 1991 sumo and im desperately trying to get an age related plate. Has anyone tried this???

It has the engine, running gear and suspension from a 1985 Granada, but the gearbox is from a seperate car!!

As far as im aware there are two ways:

First and most expensive:

RE build the car using as many parts from an old Granada as i need to to conform to the age related plate. and re-sva test it (i think).

Or

try and convince the DVLA that it should have an age related plate with as much evidence that it is nearly all from the same car.

Has anyone tried this?? And would the resale value of an age related plate out weight the money it would cost to get it in the first place????

Thanks, Deke

Hi Deke,
DVLA booklet INF46 "Registration Numbers and You" Section 22 states:

"My Vehicle has a "Q" prefixregistration number. Can it participate in the transfer and retention schemes?

Sorry, no. Vehicles are assigned "Q" prefix registration numbers to draw attention to the fact that their origins or age are uncertain. "Q" numbers are therefore non-transferrable and must remain with the vehicle unless documentary evidence which confirms its origins/age comes to light. In this case, the evidence, should be sent to your nearest DVLA Local Office who may then assign a replacement age-related number to the vehicle."

Might be worth a try.

Unfortunately the scoring system for avoiding a "Q" back in 1991 was quite different than it is today. Back then the car would have had to have been built using:-
Steering
Axles
suspension and
Transmission
from the same donor vehicle in order to retain an age related reg number.
Nowadays you only need two of the above. (You can also count the engine a one of the two now).

Back then you had to score 8 points to void a "Q". Each of th items in the list were worth 2 points each and the engine only worth 1 point.

Now it's one point per item and you can also include the engine in the new list.

Short of putting the car through SVA with a fresh (Single vehicle) donor of a couple of the items above you're stuffed really.

Stick with the 'Q'! Whats the point? How many people take any notice of your plate when you blat past them?

Or is this speed camera snobbery?
