SVA Engine data

I have just filled in the SVA form and recieved a letter back from VOSA. They are not happy with the max HP RPM that I stated on the form ( 4000 rpm) . They think the figure should be higher !. I tried too keep it lower for the noise test .

Does anyone have any suggestions for a suitable figure. The engine is a Ford 302 347ci stroker.

For future reference to anyone buying a part built project, beware!. I have sent VOSA all the major recipts for engine, gearbox, chassis, body, running gear, recipt from the seller to me, but this is still not enough. They now want recipts for the parts I have bought and detailed build photographs. Luckily I have contacted the chap I bought the car off and managed to get some. I will also send them recipts for wheels, tyres, interior and paint job...... I hope its enough ?????

Regards Mark

Hi Mark,

I guess its down to how loud you think it will be at a more realistic rpm. I think 4000 is low for that engine and so does VOSA obviously! Mines a 302 but is not stroked, we set the rev limiter to 6500 on the dyno and thats as far as Im going with it to make sure it stays together for a long time. You could try 5,500 I think thats somewhere near what stock 302 would be limited at but wait for Wilf to reply, he knows all things Ford!

Good luck!

I put 4500 on mine as recommended by Dave Brooks but I have the 350 Chevy.

Hi Mark.
It all depends on camshaft profile and compression ratio etc.
These engines have peak poewer at quite low revs, especially stroker motors. without knowing the full details I would guess between 4250 and 4500.

Angry Vosa

Just had the same problem with Vosa ref the amateur build status, they told me there was not enough proof of amateur build, so sent them lots of photos including some of my 7 yr old grandson assisting with installation of the engine to the chassis!!!! Hope that works

Just had my first letter back from VOSA - here's a summary.

1. Maximum power engine speed seems low. I put 4500 rpm.
2. Please state design axle weights - even though the form says "if you have a goods vehicle please complete the weights".
3. Select an option which best fits my build. There's a choice for partially built by someone else.
4. I can choose to submit photos at this stage if I wish
5. Please list which major components were fitted by you, or someone on your behalf not in the business of building vehicles.

2-5 are ok, but I have no idea how to justify 4500rpm, any thoughts.

Andi.

They'll probably try and 'do you' for using child labour now!

I think that some of these officals are taking things a bit too far in terms of the builder having to prove that they screwed every nut and bolt together. Surely the spirit of the thing is that it's an amateur build carried out at home. Thinking about I'd take it as a complement, your standard of build is so high that they think that Rolls Royce stuck the car together!

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't I recently read on here ( posted by MikeT) that the old Chevy’s never used to rev beyond 4,500 rpm not sure where this was posted but if it is true find out where this information is and forward it on to them. Besides this, the cam of choice has a huge effect on where your car will produce the max power so you need to do some research on this too. HTH
