right can anyone tell me whats the difference between using nyloc nuts on the diff flanges as opposed to theese other nuts which are specific for the diff due to heat? The 'special' nuts are similar to nylocs except where the plastic nyloc would be there is just a type of split washer made into the nut. I have both types ,just in case as i wanna finnish this off this w/end

any help much appreciated as always :P

The output diff flanges get hot due to being close to the brakes (inboard), so the plastic in the normal nylocs melts - therefore the other type of locking nuts are used.

I have the plastic insert nylocs on my diff output flanges - no problems in 21,000 miles.

You do have to get Nylocs hot in order to melt the nylon locking part. If you had seized brakes this may be enough to do it but if you did get them that hot then your oil seals would also be fried, so a few nyloc nuts without inserts would be the least of your worries.

I would use the steel ones if you have them but alternatively, Nylocs should be fine. (like Wilf said)

I did use nylocs on an exhaust manifold to down pipe connection once as I had no standard nuts in the stash. The nylon in them didn't last long but they never came undone either.

Craig.

I'm sure you're buying all your hardware from Jag suppliers but do be careful with these safety critical items as they have some very specific characteristics / there are some unscrupulous suppliers out there that are willing to sell normal mild nuts / bolts when they should be 8.8 etc. There was a sticky thread on here for a while about brake calliper bolts snapping as an example which I think was just bad or cheap manufacture.

You also have to be very careful if substituting these items for s/s items as the same problems arise.
