exhaust isolation

Hello,
I'm replacing the exhaust on my Cobra and it has to be fitted close to the body (3cm). As it might get quite hot, I wanted to put an isolation in between. Does anyone know what to use?
Many thanks
Serge

Just my Humble and all that but I would have thought that 3cm is more than enough of a gap. (I presume that you mean the sidepipe to body gap). Heat is a funny thing, you could probably hold you hand 15mm away from the pipe and hardly feel the heat but if you touched it half you hand would get stuck to it! I guess the heat energy decays very quickly as the distance increases.

Fresh air is a very good insulator so 30mm of it is plenty. I have about 10mm clearance around the header pipes as they come through the body and it hasn't caused any damage to the paint yet.

Headers are also a lot hotter than the side pipe itself is.

If your fitting underfloor exhaust and want to keep heat away from the floor then you can get thin fibreglass type mat with a reflective aluminium foil on one side. I have this lining my transmission tunnel and it stays cool at all times. It came from Think automotive I believe.

Indeed I will use it for the underfloor isolation.
Many thanks for your quick help!
