Clutch throw out bearing

Hi guys

i've been looking into my bell housing noise, i have raised the idle to 900rpm, it has got quieter, but i think thats due to the exhausts are louder!

Now my next question, should the throw out bearing be touching the clutch fingers all the time or should there be a small gap between them when the clutch is disengaged. hope that makes sense!

Russ

if you set up the release arm with a little movement/clearance, in reality the bearing will be just touching the diaphragm spring fingers; not a problem as theyre designed to cope with that; they just dont like a lot of preload.

I know what you mean about the bearing touching the spring fingers, this does mean that the bearing is spinning all the time. The problem is that I'm not sure how you could stop this happening, especially with a hydraulic setup as the system will naturally push the slave piston out until there is some resistance. (in other words all the play is removed from the system). At least this is my understanding of how the thing works!...I could be wrong, obviously!

the clutch bearing manufacturers expect this scenario in the real world; they test their release bearings as if theyre running in light contact and there is no issue; bearing technology has moved on a long way, and modern (dozy or lazy) foot resting on the pedal driving habits mean the manufacturers simulate 100,000 miles use with light pressure applied. As I said before the problems start when theyre under continuous heavy preload.
Dont worry.

I read your first reply after I posted my first reply and then realised that it was not an issue! Thanks for your second reply to my first reply!

Hope that makes sense!
