Question Advice please: electronic ignition systems

Hi All,
Just got back home after a couple of weeks up North & need to get cracking with sorting out the tuninig on the Cobra. Based on the advice of a couple of you on the forum, first thing to sort out is the ignition.

I'm currently running on a
Mallory Distributor (Part 2764301H) with a Lucas ignition coil DLB198 on a Sumo RV8 3.9L (originally SD1 3.5L), so I've got a couple of options to upgrade to electronic. Being a complete novice at the moment when it comes to this sort of thing, I would welcome some advice before I get my hands too dirty and completely break the Cob.....

1. Options I seem to have for the Distri upgrade would be the Pertonix Ignitor 1, Ignitor 2 or the Mallory 61011M E-Spark (right hand rotation) conversion kits (the latter being significantly cheaper) - any opinions on the above would be welcome, particularly when it comes to ease of fitment/setup.

1a. Do the Pertronix kits actually fit given the Mallory has options for left-hand & right-hand rotation (apparently for the RV8 it is right-hand) ?
1b. Presumably it also makes sense to change the ignition coil also given the minimal cost.

1c. Also, for the Pertronix, cheapest place to buy seems to be Retro Rockets, for the Mallory it's PartsORama on Ebay. Anyone got any experience of doing business with them ?

2. Secondly, how easy are these things actually to fit & get running ? I assume they replace the points (& condenser ?) directly, and the marketing spiel says they can be fitted in a matter of minutes. However, once they are fitted, do I need to do adjustments to the timing, etc. or are they just plug & play ? (sorry if the questions are basic, I'm new at this lark !)

Thanks all

Dave

You could ring JRV8 and ask how much he wants for a lucas DML8, which is one of the standard electronic Rovers dizzies. It might not be that cheap though!

Nothing to stop you running an MSD ignition box either, and with a 6AL you get a built in rev limiter.

Others here have used the pertronix to good effect, a search on that would turn up their threads.
