XJ40 3.6 MAnual Getrag 255 + 3.58 open diff.

Hi,
Now finished stripping my donor 89 XJ40 3.6 manual, and am assessing what I have retrieved. The 2 bits that I would like a bit of info on is the diff and box. The diff is open type with a tag of '3.58', and the only markings I can see on the gearbox is 'Getrag 255 2.3'. Any opinions on this set up? The only info I could find on the box lists the ratios as 3.57, 2.07, 1.38, 1, 0.76. Do I need the bell housing as well as for potential template? At present I'm thinking of using a 'Repower' 420bhp 350, or the new BAE 427 short block if this would make any difference

Cheers

Fraz

I think you'll struggle with that kind of power through the jag box. I'm no expert though and someone will be along in a minute I'm sure!

I believe you may be advised to take advise on any choice of engine supply and ensure that you obtain with any purchase a certificte that such engine would be SVA(IVA) compliant on completion of build and submission for testing.

with jonnyt there, I think 420 hp or even more so a 427 will be too much for a getrag; Tremec or (for originality) a top loader more up to that kind of output (and torque, the gearbox killer).

Not sure what kit youre building but worth talking to Ken at AK though as they have lots of getrag experience and should have a definitve answer for you.

I have a Getrag box and have no problems with it at all. The old AK demo car also had one with a Chevy fitted with a blower, plus someone else I know has one on their 351W, which has been stroked to 427, all these cars run fine so you should be OK. Of course if you abuse it too badly you will be able to break nearly any box. If you are thinking of fitting a big block though I agree you would be better off with a different box. Stroking a small block to 427 is not a good idea check out some American V8 forums the biggest they advise is going to 408. HTH

If you're thinking of using the Getrag the attached drawings may be of help.

I made these for my Dax de-dion and they seem to have done the trick (without too much filing )

The bush for the end of the crank needs to be phosphor bronze (if that's how you spell it) not brass.

Cheers,

Andy.

I recently changed the Phosphor Bronze bearing for a roller bearing. Been in a year and seams to be working very will. Cheaper too.
