Removing steering boss

Hi Guys,

I want to get my dash off to do some wiring but to do this I need to remove the quick release boss.

The wheel is a Rapid HP so I assume the boss is too.

I've removed the bulk of the boss using the bolts from behind. I then removed the big nut which holds the "thingy" (for want of a better word) onto the column but no matter how much pulling or bashing the "thingy" will not come off. I have even screwed back the steering wheel section leaving off the big nut so I could get some twist on it but no joy.

Do I need more brute force or is there something behind the bash which needs undoing. I've been fairly gentle so far.

I did have some ascii art of the "Thingy" but I see this forum doesn't format it well.

~
Mike

My GD has a Vectra column, which is tapered. The hub is pulled onto the taper and needs a puller to remove or a lever to pull off. A bolt thro the hub onto the tapered column and some metal across the hub and tightening the bolt to gradually pull the hub off will work.

Ian.

As Ian says, you may need a puller.
Did you try it with the ignition key in and the steering unlocked?

Try a gentle tap onto the loosened ( to protect the threads ) large nut in the middle.
It is only held by a spline assuming its a Jag column. WD40 might just assist.

Nope, steering lock was on.

I can't see what difference unlocking it would make apart from giving me less torque before the wheels started to turn?

I'll set up a puller and see where that gets me.

Thanks everyone .

Got the boss off.

Pulled on the thingy whilst tapping the shaft with a hammer.

Dash is now off to allow me to play. I see lots of wires now, which is good, because I understand wires.
