    Original Style Shifter

    Guys,

Thought id post a couple of pics & a desciption of the original style shifter I have made for the AK. The shifter is a piece of 1/2" 316 stainless steel which I machined the groove & the rebate just below the original style gearknob. I threaded the end to take the gearknob 1/2" UNF & then drilled & tapped the centre of the of the shifter at the gear knob end to allow the reverse lockout to be held in place with a waisted bolt. I also drilled a hole & filed square to take the reverse lockout. Next step was to polish the shifter in a lathe using 600 wet & dry. Final step was to carfully bend the shifter in an industrial press. The lockout is made from a piece of 5mm 316 stainless which I cut out, filled & then finally polished with a buffing wheel to almost mirror finish. The whole job has probably taken me a day but I am really pleased with the end result & its saved me ~£80!

Nice job Martyn, looks just like the one I bought from the States.

You might get hacked off with catching your sleeve on the reverse lockout though.......don't ask how I would know.

    Thumbs up

That is a thing of beauty Martyn, the talent of some of you chaps on here is amazing, really will be the final touch in the interior, and another thing to hold onto when you give that Windsor some wellie..
Is the gearknob marked as a 4 or 5 speed..?

You'll need to remove the reverse lockout for SVA though.
