Smile MOT pass..but..

What a beautiful day for burbling around in your Cob, called in on my local MOT man and as usual a pass, and plenty of interest in the Dax, but.. when he asked me to grasp the nsr wheel and feel how it moves fore/aft, which the osr doesn't, I had to agree that "something may be wrong.." seem to recall my old 1968 Jaguar 420 had a similar problem, must've been over thirty years ago though.
Could someone refresh my memory re this fault and the cure,
thanks in advance

Sorry Paul. But a "sensible tester" would have noted what was "slightly" worn and given an advisory notice. Just in case his local VE was sitting round the corner on his laptop

Thumbs up

Yep, I know Chris, glad to get the pass anyway, I knew the toe-in @ rear was out but this wheel movement surprised me.

Was the suspension on full droop or jacked up under the lower arms?

If jag suspension is given the old wobble test with full droop room can sometimes be felt by the Universal joints moving in end-float.
This does not happen (as much) when everything is at ride height.

I used to have this problem with my old dax.

Andy

Is this an XJS based car or a XJ40 based De-Dion chassis?

If it's XJS based........

If you jack the car on the end of the wishbone near the wheel and can still feel the movement then the wheel bearings need adjusting or replacing or the outer wishbone pivot bearings need setting up.

If you can't feel anything then jack the car up on the diff casing and try again. If you can now feel the movement then look at the inner wishbone pivot bearings while someone else wobbles the wheel. You should be able to see where the movement is happening.

Also take a look at the bracket that holds the wishbone onto the diff casing. These are held in place by 2 large countersunk bolts and although wire locked can come loose.
The Dax also has a radius arm that comes from the chassis back to the end of the wishbone. If you can feel movement in the hub fore and aft then the rose joints on the end of this arm may need replacing too.

If it's XJ40 based......

Check the bearings on the end of the De-Dion beam and check the drive shafts. Not too familiar with the De-Dion setup myself though.

Craig.

You,ll understand full droop when you get to 56,
sorry had to be the first to say it, full droop is when you jack the car up by the body or diff on indepenant suspension and let the wheel hang.

Cool

So, at 54 I have two more years, 'windscreen wiper failed in park position' is indeed a serious fault, and merits an advisory..?
