It says smiths on it , it was supplied by speedy cables and the instructions say 12v.
I think I am giving it 14.4 v though.

I think I'd be inclined to give Speedy a ring to check, the wiring diagram I have for Smiths Classic instruments show 10v for fuel, water and oil temp.

All electrical equipment for cars is badged as 12V but they are all expected to run higher than that when the engine is running. 14V - 14.7V is the norm for cars.
You could double check this with a digital multimeter on the battery terminals.

As Craig said and don't forget that some gauges have internal regulation so the voltage stab is not required. As Andi said, a call to Speedy would help and also check on the net by comparing part numbers to your instruments.

Cliffords, I have VDO gauges that consistantly show 2v below what a competent mechanic meter shows. I have arrived at the point that I don't care as long as the darn thing starts.

Last night with the cooling fan on and the headlights on at tickover I had 12v showing on the meter I rigged up , and hey presto the temp gauge read normal ( not high as it usually does) the fuel dipped a bit ( it normally runs out at 1/10) and the clock started working !

I do want to feed it all 12v

Has anyone seen a 12v stabaliser ?

Thanks
